Hi all!
I'm sure this is very simple, but it has me baffled.
I draw a shape to type INSIDE, but it won't let me, it only allows me to type on the path.
I can't see the I with the circle that I normally do, all I see is the I with the / on top to write on the path.
I've checked my options, I looked at a few tutorials. Googled and googled again... I can't find the answer.
Weird thing is that I can normally do it without problems, but sometimes, just like today it won't work, andI have no idea why.....

what am I doing wrong?

Get rid of all layers (you don't have to remove the background layer) or open a new blank file, draw the shape again and click anywhere inside your shape.
That should do the trick. :glis:

Thanks, I 'll try that. I've closed PS altogether (I do that when it starts acting funny) and I'll give that a go. Thanks!!!

Bother, I just did that, new file, and it still only gives me the "write on path" option.
Can you toggle the "path" and "inside box" options?

urgh! frustrating :27973:

:giggle: I'll be fine when I figure it out, and I'll come post it here so I can find it again!

Are you clicking inside the shape?
Make sure you keep away from the sides.

If that doesn't work, perhaps you can post a printscreen here so I can look at your settings?

I got it!! It worked!
it would seem I had the "Subtract from path area" option clicked instead of the "add to path area" which I believe is the default!!

I'm struggling with a text shape too :shout:

I want to put text inside a square shape but I have cut a part of the square out and I want the text to avoid that part, but it just runs through.

Any ideas ? Will forever be grateful :biggrin8:

Have you redrawn the shape with your pen tool?

the text shape now has two parts...maybe it might be in the way you select the path - only a a part or the whole...
in the path palette, try to click with the path selector (the black path arrow) first on one part and then, with the SHIFT held, the other one and place the text again

I draw my first square shape : with shape layers on, rectangle tool on and add to path area on.
Then I switch to subtract from path area and draw my middle square.
The path looks like I want it to look.
I click on Text tool, get the round thingy and as soon as I click inside the shape, it turns into the first square and the "cut out" is gone.

I have also tried, creating the shape as I want it, then selecting it (ctrl click), deleting the shape layer and doing Make work path from selection on the paths panel.

So far the only thing that worked a little is combining several blocks to make the "frame" but it won't fully link all 4 blocks.

I don't think you can do a cut out shape with text like that--I thought you meant one corner of the box was gone. What you can try to do is like a big block C with the two ends very close together...

My suggestion, use the pen tool, draw your shape, and type inside that.
Heather had a great challenge where that was explained, I can't find it in the tutorial section but I am pretty sure it had been copied there...
There's also a way to edit your shape after if you want. I wrote that post when I discovered how http://www.mscraps.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9563

not sure, because I still have no idea what I'm doing in PS :25r30wi: but maybe it'll help!

I'll have to play around with this some more and try Romy's and Heather's suggestion.

Note to myself : don't ever put so much text on a page again !! :rofl2:
