Paper cut outs

hey ladies,

Sorry if this question has been posted already - i had a quick scan and couldn't find it mentioned anywhere else in this thread so.........

Can anyone tell me how to do cut outs?

I've tried a few different things and can't get it to work.
Tried cutting out on a plain paper page and also clipped paper - both i have failed.

Here is an example of what i'd love to do.........thanks Katja for letting me borrow your fantastic page as an eg.

Kelly, I think what Katja did was that she made circle selections (in "add to selection" mode) and with the "text" paper layer active she hit delete to clear those selections. Then she added shadows to that paper which showed up in the circles.

Another option is to make the shape you want (say a circle), then clip your paper to it. Then take your usual paper shadow settings but instead of a drop shadow set it as an INNER shadow. I love doing it this way because then the shapes are totally repositionable until you are done and flatten the layout.

Here's an example of where I used that technique (the paper stars):

Easy hun -
1. Add a shadow layer onto the paper
2. Under the marching ants tool ("M" on your keyboard) is a circle (do shift M to get the circle tool).
3. Hold shift (to keep a perfect circle) and simply drag the circle marching ants tool out until you have the size circle you want.
4. F2 is cut (or many other ways but F2 is quickest for me!)

You can also do squares by using the normal marching ants tool and holding shift when you drag for perfect squares.

I have a feeling katja's page is a template by SAS Designs though. But cut outs are truly so easy! The hardest part is knowing where to put them! If you go wrong (which I frequently do!!) then simple use the clone tool and go over the cut out to replace the lost bit and start again (if it's a textured or patterned paper you may want to clip the paper to a layer instead).

NB: You can add another paper beneath that cut out paper layer if you like.

Yes I tried that way too. I always like to have the shadow on a seperate layer so I can raise or lower the paper (if you know what I mean! You know how utterly obsessed with shadows I am!

Katja used a template of our very own Deca Designs You girls had me worried that I didn't get my credits right, but they were ok. Pffeew.

If I were to do them myself, I'd use a paper with a layer mask on. That way you can change the position of the cut out by painting some black again to make them go away and paint white ones elsewhere. With the cut, you have to restart from the beginning. Or a layer with dots to reposition them easily and click the paper to it.
